The ELD requirement replaced most paper logbooks with devices that record duty status automatically. If you are running interstate freight, it shapes both what you must do and — more usefully — what data you now have.

The short answer

An electronic logging device connects to the vehicle and records the driver's duty status automatically, using engine data such as whether the vehicle is moving. It replaced handwritten logs for most drivers subject to Hours of Service.

The point of the rule is accuracy. A paper log recorded what a driver wrote down. An ELD records what the truck did. Those are different things, and the gap between them was the problem the rule set out to close.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration sets the requirements — what the device must record, how records are transferred during a roadside inspection, and which operations are exempt. Exemptions exist and they are specific. Confirm current applicability against FMCSA guidance for your operation rather than assuming.

ELD is not the same as HOS

Worth separating clearly, because they get conflated:

The device does not change what is permitted. It changes how faithfully the record reflects reality, and therefore how much room there is for a log to say something convenient.

What you get beyond compliance

This is where most carriers under-use what they are already paying for. An ELD is connected to the engine, so the data usually extends well past duty status:

Hours remaining, live. The compliance artifact is the log. The operational value is knowing, before you assign a load, how much drive, shift and cycle time a driver actually has left. That turns HOS from a thing you reconcile afterwards into a constraint you plan against.

Engine fault codes. Many devices surface diagnostic trouble codes. A fault that appears on a Tuesday and is visible to whoever schedules maintenance is a very different situation from one discovered when the truck stops.

Location and movement history. Useful for customer updates without calling the driver, and — relevant to detention billing — as corroboration for arrival and departure times that a broker is less able to dispute than a driver-entered number.

Distance by jurisdiction. Because the device records movement continuously, it can support per-state distance figures, which is directly relevant to IFTA reporting.

Edits, and why they are constrained

Drivers can make limited corrections — duty status is sometimes genuinely misrecorded, and a system with no correction path would be unusable.

What is deliberately constrained is driving time captured automatically. It cannot simply be edited away, edits are tracked, and the driver certifies their records. The audit trail is the feature. A record that could be quietly rewritten would carry no more weight than the paper log it replaced.

The management implication: if your dispatch plan only works when a driver edits something untrue, that is a planning problem surfacing as a compliance risk.

Choosing and integrating

Two questions decide whether an ELD is an asset or a second system to log into:

Does it export the data you need? Duty status, HOS clocks, fault codes, distance by jurisdiction. If the data is trapped in the vendor's own dashboard, you will be re-keying it into whatever you actually run the business in.

Does your operational system consume it? An ELD whose data sits beside your dispatch board rather than inside it will get checked occasionally rather than continuously.

Common questions

What does an ELD actually record?
It connects to the vehicle and records duty status, including driving time, automatically — drawing on engine data such as whether the vehicle is in motion. That automatic capture is the point: it removes the discretion a paper log allowed.
Is an ELD the same as a GPS tracker?
No. A tracker reports location. An ELD is a regulated device with defined requirements for what it records, how a driver interacts with it, and how records are transferred during an inspection. Many products do both, but they are not the same category of thing.
Does every driver need one?
Not universally — the requirement has exceptions and exemptions, including provisions relating to short-haul operations and older engines. Whether a specific driver or vehicle falls under one is a determination to make against current FMCSA guidance, not an assumption.
Can a driver edit their logs?
Limited edits are supported, but driving time captured automatically is specifically protected from being edited away, and edits leave an audit trail requiring driver certification. That combination is deliberate — an editable driving record would defeat the purpose.
